Reflection: Psalm 118

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."

Psalm 118 acknowledges the reality of the difficult times in our lives. The psalmist talks about having enemies swarming around him, of being surrounded. We can often feel surrounded and hemmed in by our troubles, unable to see a way through. The psalmist's response is to cry out to God for help.

"When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD;
he brought me into a spacious place.
The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?"

The psalmist gives thanks that God hears and responds. Do we always remember to give thanks when God answers prayers, and difficult situations are resolved? As well as acknowledging what we owe God, it helps remind us that God is trustworthy and will respond to our needs.

"I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation."

What are you thankful for at the moment? It could be a sunny day, a chat with a friend, or something much bigger. Whatever it is, give thanks to God for it and maybe make a note somewhere to remind you in future.
