Lidgett Methodist Church is a warm, welcoming community-loving church that seeks to serve those living locally, as well as its congregation, by offering various activities for people to engage in, as well a renting rooms to local groups in which they can rehearse and meet, get healthier and fitter, and alleviate isolation and loneliness – something a community survey in 2013 identified as a priority.
Our twice-weekly foodbanks (which started years before Covid was ever heard of!) are visited by regulars, most of whom we know by name, and who we seek to encourage and chat with, so that no-one goes home without at least being asked how they are. Food which would otherwise be consigned to landfill is used by those on a tighter budget as well as those in more urgent need, who have greatly appreciated getting to know more of their neighbours during these times. We hold weekly Community Cafés, keeping prices budget-friendly, for people to come alone and make new friends, as well as those visiting with family/friends. There is a weekly term-time parent/toddler group, plus a monthly tea-time church for youngsters accompanied by carers. Additionally we have monthly Coffee afternoons, and many groups meet in the building during the course of a week including a Craft and Chat group, Ladies' Keep Fit, Ladies' Leisure Group, and rooms are also rented to local groups, for purposes of rehearsals, meetings and classes such as dancing, pilates and healthy eating/losing weight. We also have a community gardening group which works hard in the church grounds, keeping them a welcoming space for those who need a safe place to reflect or pray, or for their little ones to play, or walk their dogs (on a lead please, with no 'evidence' of their visit!).
Much of what we do relies on volunteers – if you feel you have something to offer and would like to help, please contact the Administrator.
